Mini Biography

An early ambition

Steve’s passion for television began at just eight years old. Growing up in the early 1980s with limited access to equipment, he built mock studio cameras out of crisp boxes, imagining himself behind the lens. By 16, he got his hands on a real video camera—borrowed from a family friend—and began filming and editing family events while studying Electronics Engineering at Huddersfield Technical College.

After three years at college, Steve spent five years as an electronics engineer with a CCTV company, continuing to film weddings and collaborate with local filmmakers in his spare time. In 1996, he took the leap into full-time freelance camerawork, producing a successful series of Yorkshire-based DVDs that gained local and international popularity.

His professional breakthrough came in 1999, joining forces with Mezzo Films in Leeds. There, he became a trusted regular, known for his technical skill, reliability, and easy rapport with crews and clients alike.

In 2019, drawing from his on-set experience and inspired by the EyeDirect system, Steve developed the VoxBox Pro—a lightweight mirror box that allows talent to look directly into the camera while conversing naturally. Its successor, the VoxBox Air, has sold hundreds of units worldwide and was even used by HRH Prince William.

Today, in addition to filming work, Steve is the Founder and CEO of PrimeLight Design, creators of the VoxBox range and an innovative folding teleprompter—tools designed by a camera operator, for camera operators.
